Hi Jimmy,

I'm not sure what model of Lochin yours is, or what you want to use it for, but with that engine HP I'd be installing a 1.5:1 ratio gearbox. I use Clements for our prop calculations and they've always been very good.

I used to have a 280hp Sabre and a 2:1 ZF box but only got 14 knots flat out and I was told it should have had a 1.5:1 gearbox to get more speed.

I think Lee is spot on but rather than Clements I used FAL propellers in Buckie just because they were closer to me.

Good luck with the engine swap, what about some pics of your boat?

Jimmy prop size is determined by the weight & dimensions of your boat - you need someone to give you a proper calculation. As a rough guide my mate is running a 300hp ford in his and has a 4 blade 22x17 prop. Shaft size I'd be saying 1.75" really. Cheers

You really need to know the engine maximum rpm for the calculations, because the shaft speed is important for making the propeller calculations accurately. If it was me, I'd give the details of engine rpm, realistic max required boat speed and type of load / use to Clements. You'll need to give details of whether youre on a P bracket or full keel etc. I imagine they'll suggest a 1.5:1 gearbox, assuming you're running at 2500 to 2800 rpm. I used Clements for my prop and gearbox calculations. They were spot on first time.
