cats released down under

You have probably all had the experience of how one job leads to another.

I started my pre summer check with a small repair of an exhaust leak on starboard side, then found the risers were very corroded that lead to inspection of the manifold.

Before I knew it we were inspecting the cylinders and oh boy .... one of them had a tidemark and a bit of pitting.

At some stage water must have got into the engine, presumably through the rusted risers. The port engine was then inspected and no surprise, similar problem in one cylinder.

So the Cats are now in the workshop for a lot of expensive TLC.

Surprisingly the take out was remarkably easy thanks to the good old RNLI and Lochin design. It took 4 hours to take the roof panel off and remove the floorboards and with a skilled crane driver all went smoothly.

I have now read that the risers need to be inspected and changed regularly, some say every 4 years!  For my Cats 3208 that would be  1000 pounds each X 4!

Will keep you posted of progress,

Have a great Christmas and happy New Year from New Zealand.

Wilfried

Hi Wilfried

Sorry to hear you are having problems, but it seems like you have them well under control. It seems like me that owning a boat is a bit like fighting bush fires, always chasing about looking for the next problem - unless you are extremely rich and can pay someone to do it for you. Anyway good luck with the repairs and have a great Christmas and New Year.
Cheers
Martin
