Happy Christmas everyone. I hope you all have a geat Christmas and a fab New Year and that 2014 is safe and peaceful and brings all you could wish for. Here on Mull we will be having a traditional family christmas and trying to avoid the succession of gales which has been sweeping across the west coast for weeks now. The generator is prepped and the candles ready for when the power goes off just in case.
Right, gonna throw the doors open and see what everyone thinks!
I'm going to remove the remainder of the big steel mast which was on LJ when I got her. It will weigh a ton and has 2 big stays to the wheelhouse edge, all these are going rusty and no matter what I do don't last a season without generating unsightly orange streaks. Also the original roof rails are rusting and due to be replaced.
Im looking at a radar arch probably in ally as opposed to stainless, ally being thicker chunkier tube and will look better according to engineer. Should we go with 2 rails vertical or swept back a bit. It will have the radar which is currently on a pedestal at the front plus 3 aerials radar reflector anchor light and poss port n stbd lights maybe a new remote spot too.
It will tidy the roof up no end lower the centre of gravity make maintenace easier and the spot being higher up wont illuminate the pushpit and cause glare.
Any ideas, pics, thoughts would be appreciated. The grab rails will be in stainless to match existing rear extensions
Martin I would post some photo's of the gantry/radar arch that has been made for my new boat but I don't have any yet, so it will be into the new year before I can do that. It wont be fitted until launch though as the boat has to pass under a bridge very close to launch site at Blue water boats, Plymouth.
I think two rails angled rearwards looks better personally.
Mine has been made in 40mm stainless tube from memory, but may be bigger diameter. It will have all the things you mentioned, with all the wiring going inside the tube, so nothing exposed.
Whatever you decide to do it will almost certainly be much better than the existing mast.
Regards.
Dave

My deal with the sports fisherman fell through for reasons beyond my control. Insurance terms were very costly to meet this year due to a couple of claims in the last 12 months. Onwards and upwards - there will be others!
Martin - here are a few pics of our new (June) fitted frame to the wheelhouse, hopefully they can give you some ideas of what you can go for. I'd always opt for stainless over ally but thats personal preference.
Hope you all enjoy the holidays, and here's to a happy 2014
Cheers,
Lee
