Lochin 33 Osprey M275

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help? Trying to track down a Lochin 33 prawn trawler (a rare thing a Lochin TRAWLER!) Osprey M 275. She was built in Wales by the owner and fished out of Fife although we spent a lot of time in Mallaig. Also on the hunt for set of plans for a basic 1980's vintage Lochin 33 (Standard wheelhouse)

All help gratefully received

Thanks

Jake

Hi,

It's me replying to my own post......I wrote to Simon at Lochin and he advised me that the original plans were sadly lost in a fire. That kinda scuppers me from the start unless some kind Lochin owner with a wheehouse like the one in my snap is willing to take a few wheelhouse measurements for me. Any offers ?

Thanks

John

Hi John,

welcome to the forum, sorry cannot help with the dimensions as mine is a sports cruiser (long wheelhouse) but Leespot on this forum has a similar wheelhouse to your photo and there are some photo's of his boat if you search down the posts.

Hopefully he will see this and be able to run a tape measure over.

Best Wishes

Geoff.............

Ho John

Again, welcome to the forum. I have had a look at the Lochin you mentioned and confess I have never seen a Lochin trawler. Mine was originally a ultra short wheelhose version (worked as a creel boat for 15 years) which I think is the same as the one in the pics but mine had the wheelhouse extended before I bought it also had new windows which aren't the same as the originals.

Good luck with your search. I have seen a few similar lochins for sale recently on FAFB if you get stuck you could always give one of them a bell.

Cheers

Martin

Geoff/Martin,

Thanks for the welcome and for taking the time to reply. Hopefully Leespot will reply too. Yes, the Osprey was probably unique. I was a fisherman back then and my friend skippered the Osprey for a Welsh chap. I was the trusty deck hand . I have never seen another Stern trawling Lochin although I saw a scalloping one down on Southampton water. Truth be told a Lochin hull is not the best trawler hull but to her credit she certainly put in a feisty performance. She was powered by a Ford Sabre (170 hp turbo ? I must check) and we even had a wee Kort nozzle! Where we did score was during bad weather. She was a very stable working platform when we were towing, I think because she was so low and squat' Lots of nayayers said we wouldn't catch but we did! After she left Fife I have no idea where she went. I hope she is out there somewhere, hopefully being cared for by a kind Lochin owner and having a nice easy life!!

Thanks again

John

Hi John,

I have a Lochin 33 Workboat and will be able to get you some measurements, but, the boat broke her moorings in a gale yesterday and I don't know how damaged she is. Found bows up on rocks. She is a tough old boat though and a very heavy layup (we had to put 500hp in to get over the hump). I'm going to inspect the boat today as it was towed to the marina. When I've gotten things settled down and spoke to the insurance co, I'll be in touch. (doesn't surprise me that you fished in weather when others wouldn't!)

Cheers,
Lee

Hi Lee,

Firstly let me say that I am really sorry to hear your news and I hope your boat is ok. Lochins are tough so hopefully any damage will be minimal.....I also appreciate the fact that you got in touch when you must have ad other things on you mind, thank you!

It would be great if you could help when things settle down for you. I really just need a few external measurements, mostly for the wheelhouse, but that can all wait.....

Thank you again and all the very best.

Cheers

John

Hi John,

It's unfortunate but these things happen. A friend of ours also ended up with damage to his Offshore 105 and looks like pretty much needs a new wheelhouse. I'm going to hand ours over to the insurance on Monday - Ocean Star is afloat but a little knocked about. Handrails, gantry, wheelhouse roof damage, liferaft smashed, radpme smashed, navlights smashed, few other knocks along the way - D fendering ripped off, prop damaged etc. Started her up this morning on the button so thankfully no engine damage that we can see. Will be aboard next week - send me the measurements you need and I'll get them for you.

Cheers,
Lee

Hi Lee

Sorry to hear about Ocean Star. Hope you manage to get everything sorted with the insurance company and the damage is not too great.

All the best

Martin

Thanks Martin - the boat is out of the water now and being surveyed. She has taken a good knock below, with the keel band being damaged. Water up to the gearbox hence the emergency lift out. Surveyor has advised hull needs to be taken down to inspect for stress fractures with it being knocked about on the rocks. Slightly gutted at the moment but hopefully she can be sorted!

Cheers,
Lee

Ouch! sounds like quite a bit of damage. When I bought LJ the keel band was rusted away in 1 place so I asked the yard to replace it. They said it was bolted through the hull so a big job to replace and repaired it instead by splicing a new piece in. Hope you don't have to strip back to hull or it will be a huge job and take ages. Good luck with the repairs, I hope you have so,me good news soon.

Martin

Hope you get some good news Lee. Hopefully it turns out not too bad. If you want to put off your earlier offer, I totally understand. You have more than enough to deal with just now.

Very Best

John
