Boat Fire Eastbourne

Hi All

thought id share this from the Eastbourne RNLI website.

http://www.eastbournernli.org/boat-fire-drama-off-beachy-head/

Luckily the owner wasnt injured and taken off the boat safely. Although I dont know the owner, i have seen the Aquastar Pacesetter 27 around the marina and looked in lovely condition. Sending best wishes to him and hope his insurance company settle quickly.

Regards

Geoff...........

Hi Geoff

Thanks for sharing that - I think. Fire has always been the worst enemy at sea. Any idea how it started?

I have just organised for my extinguishers etc to be serviced.

Regards

Martin

Hi geoff

No problem, it seems a lot of fires start when the oil feed to the turbo leaks onto the turbo and ignites. However, the last major boat fire round here was on Tiree. The chiller on the pier overheated and started a small fire which melted a diesel tank which then ran down the pier onto 4 boats and set them all on fire. 3 were right offs and the 4th had to have new wheelhouse and gunwhales! Seems you can't prepare for everything.

Cheers

Martin

Yep, had one a couple of years ago for that very same reason. I was lucky to be able to put the fire out before it did any real damage.

Keep an eye on that turbo oil feed pipe, they have a tendency to  rust. Make sure it remains immaculate!

Cheers

Chas

That's one of the teasons why I am happy with our Iveco, the KKK turbo is water cooled and don't come above 80 deg. C.

what's by far not hot enough to ignite leaking engine oil.

br,

kees.
