Hello guys, I have trawler thro a lot of threads going back a long way on this site and I can only find spray rails getting mentioned, firstly are they available as an off the shelf addition? If so where can I get one?
Secondly I spoke to someone the other day who knew my boat 10 years ago and said the boat used to do around 18 kts, I only seem to be able to get about 13 at full chat which I don't like to do so 10 kts seems to be my average, having read extensively about weight distribution of lochins (especially fuel tank locations) I believe the fresh water tanks must have been astern and not forward where they are now, I have 2 110 gallon tanks alongside the engine which I now believe should have been put maybe about 4 foot further back, unfortunately I have lifted her out for overhaul so won't get a chance to check this out until next year, has anyone had similar experience and fixed it by moving weight back and would the addition of the spray rail help lift the bow.
That's enough questions for now
Hi Paul and welcome to the forum. We are in Australia and have a 33 extended wheelhouse.
My boat has a 420 yanmar and when we first trialed it in 2006 she would only do 17 knots. She was originally fitted out by Lochin in their factory in Rye and was well balanced. Then several owners later the boat was custom refitted (in a poor way) and totally ruined. They put way too much weight in the bow section. A water tank and heavy timber was used to decorate the cabin. Also the batteries were way too forward. I decided to bring her back to her original state/layout. The 2 fuel tanks lay on each side of the engine, which was original. I took them out and cleaned them, then refitted them in the same place. To make a very long story (she was a 3 year project)short, she now does 24 knots with a clean bottom.
Simon Thomas will happily sell you a set of spray rails. You'll find the phone number on the website. It will make the boat much drier.
Kind regards
Harold

The spray rails I think you are refering to are on this Lochin website in the 'Lochin shop' section. Simon Thomas should be able to help you with your questions.
Regarding your weight distribution question, my boat 'Sorcerer' has the V drive configuration with the engines mounted well aft and driving a cardon shaft forward to the remote gearbox then back under the engine to the props. I chose this option as I wanted total accessibility to the engines. The two fuel tanks of approx 950 ltres total, sit pretty much across the centreline of the boat and the batteries, 100 litre water tank and 30 litre calorifier are forward of these. It works well and although I have a lot of horsepower, she has done over 30 knots, which means I can cruise easily at 22-23 knots and a fast cruise of 25 without struggling to see over the bow.
I fitted "factory" spray deflector rails to mine some time ago at the same time as I fitted a bow thruster.
They make hell of a difference and transform the boat from being "very wet" to quite dry. So dry in fact that that one of the next jobs was to fit windscreen washers.
Fitting them is not that easy in as much as it is quite disruptive to the insides of the boat because they have to be bolted through (as well as being glassed on) on about 200mm centres. Then the bolts ground flush with the nuts and the whole lot glassed over. This can be particularly problematic in the galley (if yours is downstairs) and in the bog.
I think Hannsson Brothers fitted a set last winter and I've got quite a few photos I can send you.
Hi there i have fit the Spraytdeflectors a job in many stage thanks to Chas pictures and good advise the installation vent vell... Im so curious to test them but have my engine in the workshop now in many many parts....
David here from Lochin. Glad to see you have joined the forum and I hope we can help. We have the moulds for the L38 and L33 spay delectors here, so please contact Simon or I on 01273 512 619 for more details.
