I have never had a cheap boat, they always end up costing a fortune no matter what you do!

Seriously though it depends on the state of the gear, the hulls seem to go on forever and hold their value. From one pic it might still be in the original gel coat which is rare for a boat of that age and if so could be polished proffessionaly to bring it back. The wheelhouse has obviously been lined in something and might be in good condition underneath without too much damage.

A full survey and engine/gearbox oil analysis would be a must for me and of course being a Yorkshireman I would have to have a couple of grand off the asking price!

Hi Dave

Cheap depends on how much of it is sound and what your final expectations are.

How good is the hull? mine had been epoxy treated at some time in the past so there may or may not be osmosis problems.

How good is the engine, gearbox, prop shaft etc?

Can you find out any history especially have there been any surveys in the last few years or proof of work being carried out.

A full survey would be essential but could be a big waste of money if you don't do some homework first.

I wouldn't expect to find the original wheelhouse lining in good condition. Mine and probably most others of that sort of vintage were originally lined with a material called "mural mousse" which goes brittle, shrinks and comes apart at the joins. Orrible stuff - wallpaper for boats!

The interior generally looks quite maulled so it would be very difficult to get it back to "as issued" condition but you might not want to do that in which case, it wouldn't be an issue.

See if you can get some history, then go and look at it.

Hi Dave,
As others have said,this is certainly a tired Lochin.
A good survey should highlight the major faults, as for mechanical issues an oil analysis may help but the engine maybe as tired as the rest unless history proves different.
If the engine/gearbox run well without major smoke, oil leaks and breathing issues, a major inspection and service with maybe a view to replace later on if required.

Your question though is it cheap?

Personally for a Lochin of that age it is an average price that will become a money pit if you intend to refit to a good standard. Certainly worth a low offer subject to survey and if you intend to have it as a useable "work in progress" it maybe an option !
