Liferafts

Hi All

Havent posted for a while good to see some great input and discussions thought i would ask the panel their thoughts on this one.

I have a Plastimo 6 man canister liferaft overdue service and inherited with boat.
Now 10 years overdue service and have been quoted approx £300 to be serviced.
Boat used for private use only but any safety item is a bonus.

Just found relevant paperwork for my liferaft and it is 20 years old !. Is this liferaft coming to the end of its serviceable life ?.
Do i have it serviced asking them to phone me with a condition report first ?.
They then are going to try and sell me a replacement and have my liferaft stripped in there posession which means further cost to get it back,or do just replace it at approx £700 ish quid approx and the old one Ebay it Sold as seen at their risk.

Chances are it will work in an emergency and would certainly not give any thought about using it in that situation but now confused over best option.

Geoff - it doesn't do any harm to get a quote - we have Adec call from time to time to collect liferafts for service and because they do a delivery service there shouldn't be any cost if it can't be serviced. I have some ready to go so if you need it done, leat me know soon.

Thanks Simon, I'll await the report. I will let the forum know the outcome considering the 20 year age and 10 years lack of inspection. Geoff

Simon has reported back that the Liferaft is indeed serviceable considering its 20 years of age and lack of inspection for 10 years ,so all is indeed not lost. Although everything requires replacing still more economical than new replacement.
Hope this helps anyone else unsure whether to service or replace.

Geoff

Hi Chas,

Yep Liferaft back onboard, next inspection 2011, so worthwhile, half the cost of a new replacement. Serviced via Lochin Marine so anyone else need one serviced im sure Simon will be able to assist.smile.gif

Sounds very good Geoff!

Can I ask how much as I have an Avon (about 4 years old) which will need a service before next season.

Cheers

Chas
