Hello lads

just a few more snaps of flying eagle, new rubbing strake all round and a dirty cooker, been playing with fibre glass insert in cabin roof to finish off the velour trim, my blue canopy is what i need some help with, a few small tears and could do with a waterproof treatment, has anyone had a similar issue

I am also considering a 500 plus lump, I have read a lot lately but does anyone (including Simon) have any recommendations on the best suited engine (size, noise and smoothness)

As you consider, to upgrade your engine.

There is one choise that fit your needs! I now what i talking of.smilesmile

If you realy like the best go for the D 9 V P!!!!(there are two type's, with additionally posibility of chip tuning if you like to go to the 600bhp area)

mine is powered with such piece of geniality.

1850rpm and going 18 kn at ease.(bare in mind to install you >500 plus, in good order, prop shaft, prop size rudder rigid, trimtabs, engine air venting and intake, exhaust system, fuel tank ballansing ... . to prevent

problems if you go for the ultimate power rate of such an engine.) because this class of engine is

really overkill if not correct handled, installed. My highest was 29.8 kn, way over the hull speed.( only the skeg and prop, with the trims retained wet.)worship.gif

  

there for not safe ; not knowing what you are dealing with.

600hp in a Lochin! Sounds like a flying machine I'd love to see a video of you doing the 29.8kn. I could do Northern Ireland in about 2 hours at that speed - on a calm day of course!

HI Monkfish.   You are right, the D9 is a great engine, as are quite a few of the Volvo's.

You may remember my previous boat 'Sorcerer' made 30.5 knots. But that was with twin D6's at 370hp each.

I probably had a little more weight than your big single engine, which may have helped keep her in the water, but I did have to trim her very carefully or she would be a little unstable and keel/chine walk at very high speed. She was fine up to around the 28 knots mark though and must have looked good at those speeds!

If I wasn't going around 30-40 or 50 miles each time we go fishing, I would probably have had a big single....I even considered a D11 in my new boat, but once again opted for twin D6's at 435hp each, because of the extra security of two engines.....that and the fact I am no marine engineer if something went wrong!!

hello all,

happy to see that several people are still looking at the site,

as Dave say's with the throttles flat @ the desk she is unstable.frustrated.gif

  

I will try to make a movie the next time the weather allow's it.and i take here for a trip. (not as in the picture.)confuse

mine D9 is the 575bhp type, if it would be needed it is possible to give it an additionaly 25bhp by tuning the software. (but realy i don't need it.)

the speed i like to cruise  is already reached at a +/-1800 to 1900 rpm. and that is 17.5 to 19 knots for here.(slick hull)biggrin reasently blasted to the orriginal gelcoat

i'm taking when fully bunkered, +/- 1200 ltr fuel along, and max 4 people. and it consumes at this rate, +/- 40/45ltr an hour. (me and my father and occasionally a few friends)

prop. is as i remember 27" x 23". 4 blade.(if required i will see for the  correct spec's) I know that there is done a modification to the hull stiffners to give the engine and gearbox, correct angle

to the prop. shaft. but this was a minnor issue.(to be in order with the builder specefications for trim and list when engine is opperational)

there was done some refurbish work on the interior not so long a go. to have an nice seat for crew when cruising.

Hi guys
The D9 sounds great, fortunately I am an engineer with my own boat building business so the installation and alignment isn't a problem, I was looking at a duplex shaft and a new 5 blade power prop, will look at the pricing this week, 30 knots sounds mad but travelling to the isle of man and Ireland in a matter of a few hours sounds good too

Nice bit of kit Dave, she should be smooth as silk with those pushing along.

Paul, we put a 500HP Cummins QSC in our workboat and she will do approx 27.8kts top end which isn't bad for an old heavy laid up boat. She does get along well with 10 anglers and crew on, 2250rpm gives 18-19kts with full tanks. When light and flat out, she digs her arse in and kites a little so we don't push it too much and theres never any need to go flat out anywhere - 18kts is covering ground well enough. We do Liverpool to IOM in 3.5hrs at 2200rpm and 4 on board with all the gear.

If i may ask Lee, what kind of prop is fitted underneath the boat??

i do have a spare five blade, custom made, but the former boat owner wasn't so

fund of it, think i stick with the 4 blade and keep it as spare.confuse

it is the intention to try to change it for a identical prop as the one i have fitted now.

 Hi,

Prop is a 4 Blade 23.5 x 22.5 on a 1" 3/4 T-MET shaft - probably right on our limits with the HP and shaft size :)

Hi Dave,

You write two engines is extra security.

Most probably it gives you a safe feeling, but is it really much safer ?

When my prop picked up a 2 inch rope crossing a fair lane with an ocean going vessel approaching fast, my first idea was sell the boat and buy one with two engines.

Discussing this with our harbor master,an old tugboat Capitan, I slowly changed my mind.

He started with: Al commercial fishing boats, work boats, tug boats, lobster boats big and small, are all one engine single prop boats and they go out on sea, when you decide it's far too dangerous. You picked up a rope with your single prop who is partly protected by the keel, that's bad luck. The props of a twin engine boat are much more exposed to ropes and other floting debris and they can together pick up the same rope, nets or whatever.

Further he claims that if one engine dies due a fuel problem, water in fuel or clogged filter, the other engine will most probably die soon also, so a lot is depending on maintenance and a one engine skipper is much more aware of the fact that he depends on only one engine and drive unit, where a twin engine skipper can have the idea no problem I have two.

I am pretty sure a lot of skippers don't agree with me, so let the big debate begin.

How is your boat? Do you still have her?

Ah, the single or twin engine debate.  If I knew a bit about engines then I would probably have had a big single, as I said in an earlier post above, but due to the fact that I am not too good with engines I opted for two.

I did get a rope around a prop on my little twin engine Seaward some years ago and was grateful for two then....that memory has stuck with me!

Also, due to crowded marina's here, the two engines, combined with a bow thruster, will make the 40 more manouverable.

I understand what you say about fuel contamination and it will affect both tanks and engines, but I also had sensor issues before which shut one engine down and I had fuel issues on one engine when it picked up crap from the bottom of the tank, but the other one was fine!

Swings and roundabouts I reckon.
