Greetings from New Zealand ,
I have just bought RNLI 33 12 . Originally lifeboat in Girvan , Scotland but
the last 18 years in the New Zealand Coast Rescue based in Nelson , at the top of the South Island .She is in very good condition and has the original 2 Cat 3308 s
Now my main focus will be to make her a little bit more " homely " while trying to preserve as much originality as possible . That way the missus may join me on trips in the local fjords called " the Marlborough Sounds "
I hope I can ask you guys all sorts of advise as I progress.
Will send a few picks soon.
I am also originally from Holland and escaped the lousy weather a long time ago !
Cheers
Wilfried
There are many knowledgeable members on here that will be able to help with any questions you may want to ask....I asked a few when my boat 'Sorcerer' was being built and still do now. Someone might even have some original pictures of your boat.
Those original Cat engines must have done a few hours by now but they were built to last and the RNLI would not have wanted unreliability.
Post some pics of your new boat as soon as you get the chance and good luck on making her 'homely'.
Welcome to the forum. Glad to have someone from New Zealand around and looking forward to some pics of your Lochin and the area you wil be using her in.
Hi there welcome to this great forum I have got much help from this nice people here on the forum... Im restoring an old lochin 33 that military had.I like the rlni model much seem so robust and made for heavy conditions.....Your boat seems to be in great shape....
Warm welcome to you Wilfried from the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia.
What a surprise and how excited we are to hear your story. In 1995 I visited the Coast Guard in Nelson and went on a ride on your Lochin. I too am from Holland and bought my Lochin over in 2006. After 3 years of restoration she is now back to original factory specs.I am running a Yanmar CXMETE 420hp (7.1 litre). This engine was put into the boat new by a previous owner in Holland (1999). The hour meter reads 650hrs so I should get many more hours out of her. My occupation is GRP repairs so any questions related to glass or gelcoat I will be happy to help you with. All the members on this forum are a very talented and knowledgable lot so there won't be any problem with advice.
I've been in oz 22 years and originally from Amsterdam. We became involved with Lochin Marine in 1977. Simon Thomas will be more than pleased to hear of your new buy. (owner of Lochin Marine).
Glad to hear she is going to a good home. Good luck and hope to hear from you soon.
All the best,
Harold
PS There is an old 33 in Milford sound. It's a long story, but if you would like to know it I can fill you in.
I have a 1977 long wheelhouse Lochin 33 and have gradually been restoring her over the years.
Best of luck with your project. The guys on this forum will always try to help you if they can, I've seen a lot of good information exchanged over the years.
It would be nice to see some pictures of the fjords you mention.
Thanks for posting the pics. It certainly cheers up a damp and cold British winters day. Your area sounds similar to mine in that we have salmon and mussel farms but it looks like you have nicer weather. We also get Orca and Dolphins but the Orca are pretty rare and are only seen a couple of times a year.
As for your Cats I am no expert but I would suggest that 2600hrs is nothing for these engines and that they are barely run in with many thousands of hours to go if looked after properly. One forum said that after 50000 gallons of diesel used they were due for a rebuild but I also found the 2 statements I have copied below. The only problem with them seemingly is they don't have liners in the block so are considered ''throw away'' engines in that you can't fit new liners. No doubt someone on here will have had more experience of these engines that me (which is nil).
''My Dad had a 210 horse 3208 in one of his boats, 20,000 hours, no major work on it, heads never off, 1 inj pump, a few sets of injectors. It was ran real easy with oil changes every 200 hours. The oil pan rusted through, big oil leak and he started having problems with things bolted to the engine, water cooled exhuast manifolds, raw water pump, reduction gear, but the basic engine still ran OK when he replaced it. ''
''I posted a similar question a year or so ago. My question was in regard to a 3208 in a 36 foot lobster boat. Thats a pretty harsh environment for any engine.
10000 hours in a boat is not at all unusual, and a rebuild below that is a disappointment. The 3208 has been one of the standards in the lobster boat for years. I think it's popularity is now fading as newer engines are showing improvements.''
My name is Simon Thomas MD of Lochin here in the UK.
I visit Nelson in 2002 and inspected the Coastguard boat then and discussed with the captain their operation and how the Lochin fitted their requirements. He said that she was perfect for their operation and had served them well since acquisition.
You asked about 'Lyonesse' which we have just sold on behalf of Alan Low (also a forum member) to the NSRI in South Africa and she has just arrived in Cape Town. Originally bought by Gerry Gerritson (dutchman from near Den Helder) and refitted here in Newhaven prior to serving him for about 10 years before Alan bought her. Alan maintained her lifeboat character although she had an element of comfort internally with a decent heads and galley area and a table arrangement in teh wheelhouse. The Cat 3.208 engines were both rebuilt in his ownership and performed well acheiving her orginal designed service speed of 18 knots with ease - she would in fact do in excess of 20 knots if pushed.
The NSRI were delighted to have acquired her as they had just lost one of theirs to a fire (nothing to do with the boat but a yard adjacent to where their boat was stored caught alight).
We wish you good luck with your project and as NZ is my favourite destination in all the world, I shall now have a further reason (excuse) to visit it!
If you emai, me your details - sales@lochin.com I will let you have Alan Low's details and don't hesitate to ask any questions. Of course, the guru of Lochin's - Harold Timmer is a font of information and he speaks your language so it's win win!!
Welcome aboard the real boat world of Lochin. I have a Lochin 33 GDSV named Watchful Ex-Sea Fishery Patrol Vessel much the same age as yours.I have some original photos taken of your boat the day she was placed on station in Girvan Scotland.I will look to see if I have any further information on 33-02.Which I will forward to you.I hope you enjoy your Lochin as much as we do.
I am indeed very interested in further info about my boats history. Your posted photoos are of 33-02 . That is not my boat but the former lifeboat in Oban . Of course they all look the same. Girvan had another Brede no 33-04 before they got my present boat 33-12 in 1985
Great to see the old photos of Oban. It took me a few moments to recognise the place as I didn't read your post first. What tweeked my curiosity was the ship in the background of pic 2. Unless I am mistaken the large ship in the background is the ''Fingal'' built at Blythswood's yard on the clyde (the last one). A fine old ship which graced the waters around here for many years as the Northern Lighthouse Boards bouy tender etc. I was told she was a sister ship to Brittannia but can't find any mention of that in her history.
I will also be calling into Oban around lunchtime to pick up a group of surveyors en-route to the survey area off Islay, incidently.
I walked along Poole Quay this afternoon and commented to my Sister about your Lochin Watchful. You had full compliment of crew onboard else i would of taken a photo.
I hope Wilfred you take some more work in progress photo's as you refit Girvan to your requirements and have time to share with us Lochin owners.
A few more pics from progress and this weekends sunny trip in local waters to warm up your Northern Hemisphere winter . Girvan as RNLI 33 12 is now called was relaunched last week , not with Dutch liquorice but with a bottle of cheap champagne . She had some minor hull repairs done and is now shiny again .As a few other contributors to the forum indicated of their boat : looks great as long as you observe some distance. WC now in place .Ongoing discussion as to how much to cover up the " business " bits. I am quite happy to admire the automatic Halon BTM fire system while sitting on the throne .A magnificent piece of British/RNLI engineering ! Now I have to wait and see if my lady wishes pannelling. Next will be the small galley at the aft/port corner of the wheelhouse .Again some "business" bits are in the way , namely the fuel tanks change over controls and the wheelhouse air intake fan . I don t want to touch any of this. We have decided to install a 2 burner Origo alcohol/meths stove. Anyone has experience with these ? Next job a nice bed in the "survivors " space .The headlining in wheelhouse has already been replaced. I will also post a photo of another converted RNLI Lifeboat in our local Marina. It is a Waveney class , owned by an American couple . Steel hull , quite a bit bigger , same Caterpillar engines. Thanks for your warm welcome and encouraging words of wisdom Wilfried
Looks like you are making good progress with your new boat. Great to see pictures which have sun in them as it has been a pretty dreich winter here on the West coast - not good for trying to paint the hull before re-launch. We have an Origo stove which was brand new and unused when we bought our Lochin 3 years ago. Using the stove is fairly simple and they work well. The only grumble is that even if you don't use the stove the meths will still evaporate and you will find yourself filling it more often than you thought. You will also need a long nosed stove lighter or similar as matches are hard to use. These stoves have a reputation for smelling when in use but if you add about 10% water to the meths it eliminates most of the smell and makes it more pleasant. Other than that we have only had a small weld break on the pan rack which needed repair. I would reccomend getting some pan holders to stop the kettle sliding about too.
Congrats on the purchase of your Brede. They are fantastic, reliable vessels and have proved their worth on South African waters. The NSRI currently has six of them in the fleet, including "Lyoness", which is currently getting a new lick of paint and extra spray rails added as well as being made back to a less comfortable "lifeboat spec". Ironically, there is another Brede (33-07) of the NSRI having a total refit & repower right next to Lyonesse (33-05) in the same boatyard! The boatyard is posting pictures of both refits on Facebook if you're interested. Look for Treetops Marine on FB and you should be able to find the pics.
When they come out they will look something like this. This pic is of our Brede based in Port Elizabeth (33-09) that had a refit and repower last year. She now sports Volvo Penta D6-330 engines which makes her good for 25 knots!
