Hello all, I am a new member but had my Lochin 33 for about 5 months now, it was in Ardrossan and is called Flying Eagle if anyone knows it, I have renewed the 2 tanks and put a new sealed deck in just to get me fishing over in the Isle of Man this season, I have now brought her back to Gateshead for the winter and intend to completely refurb her, looking initially for info on the window seals, she has a large wheelhouse with huge windows, love the layout but where can I get new seals, look forward to any help I can pickup
welcome to the forum, what part of the windows do you need to seal....... between frame and glass or frame and wheelhouse?
If between frame and glass you need to remove window, strip frame apart, clean and seal with arboseal mastic, basically filling frame with mastic and pushing glass back into making sure squirts out both sides of glass then leave to set before trimming up.
If between frame and wheelhouse, remove window clean up and re bed on Arborseal tape. I am in the process of doing this to my Lochin and have done 4 out of the 7 in the wheelhouse and have stopped all the leaks.
I had small seapage around frame and glass on a couple of windows but have successfully stopped this by triming sealant between glass and frame with a blade, masking frame and glass then running a bead of marine grade silicon around rather than taking frames apart and creating even more problems.
Hi Geoff,
When I took my boat from Whitehaven to the isle of man it was about force 8 and I took a few million gallon over the bow and about a pint got through the front window seals, not bad for such a rough journey but my other boats let nothing in so I expect the same from my lochin.
The previous owner must have trained a drunken spider to drag silicone all over the window seals so they look quite a mess, I do intend to take all the windows out and polish the aluminium frames and re tint all the glass.
Someone has mentioned there is a rubber seal which fits without the need for sealants but that may be a myth hence my question.
Cheers
Paul
Think you will find the glass is sealed into the frame with sealer eg... arboseal or sikaflex. Some windows do have seals but most fixed windows are sealed into frame. Problem using seal inserts the salt corrosion builds up between seal and frame and bulges, distorting seal and corroding frame underneath unless regulary cleaned and drain channels kept free of dirt.
I had a similar challenge a few years ago but my windows were is such poor condition and so badly fitted (i.e. nothing lined up or followed the lines of the wheelhouse) that I did a few modifications and bought new ones.
My new ones were supplied by Seaglaze (that's another story altogether!) and the glass is bedded into the frames in some sort of black rubbery mastic.
There are several companies who seem to specialise in window refurbishment, Eagle Boat Windows for one, but you should find others in the internet.
I was recommended and used Arbomast BR (a non- setting butyl based sealiong compound) for bedding the frames to the wheelhouse and it works well. I use this for sealing most deck fittings as you can still prize them off if necessary and the stuff lasts a long time in the tube.
Don't use Sikaflex for bedding the frames because you would never be able to get the windows out again without destroying the frames. It would also probably go off to quickly to allow effective bedding.
Well chas I managed to get my hands on four rolls of arboseal from seaglaze marine, that turns out to be the black rubbery mastic your windows are bedded into your frames with.
I will let you know how I get on but it seems straight forward
Hi chas, my boat has a hull number of 234 and was built by lochin but the last owner from ardrossan/ Largs said he could not find anything about it's history other than the cox of Largs lifeboat used to own it, as far as the windows go I have managed to get the first one out amongst all the silicone, putty, superglue, secoflex and all the other sticky substances previous owners have tried to use to stop leaks, got the frame stripped down now and almost clean, gonna look at maybe powder coating the frames or having them chromed, that should tidy the look of the wheelhouse up a bit, will put some pics up if I choose which i think is best
