Speed and fuel consumption.


Hello Guys, 

I haven't been on here for ages but I'm still hoping to get a Lochin 33 sometime soon.  I've had my IP23 advertised for a while and some people are interested and coming to trial her next week when I get home from my travels.  Hopefully they will buy Magpie and that will be the first step towards getting the 33.  Just didn't want to be the owner of two boats at the same time.

I've seen a couple of older 33s for my sort of money.  My question is what sort of speed could I expect from a single 175 HP engine or alternatively twin 130HP engines?  I don't really need to do 20 knots but would like to double Magpie's cruising speed and get 12knots with 14 or 15 max.  Am I expecting too much from these small engines?

I reckon they'll burn about 8 gallons an hour for 12 knots.  Magpie burns 1 gallon per hour for 6 knots so I'm going to find a difference in my expenses.  The difference is I'll be able to get to the Channel Islands or the Scilly Isles within 8 hours and that is a real life changer.

Hello Charlie,

Single engine 175hp probably no more than  12-13knots max

Twin 130hp should give in the region of 15 knots max.

As for fuel consumption not alot between them, would of thought 4-5 galls per hour cruising.

Pref between single or twin set up is personally your choice, just remember servicing doubles.

 My Lochin is twin engined each of 200hp, similar to the one that Lochin have for sale. I use mainly single handed and having owned 6 years I can take around the marina on engines only!

 Early Lochins are still great boats, admired by many and still providing great service and enjoyment to there owners!

I have an older Lochin with a single 280 Ford Sabre. Best I have had was 14.5 knots clean bottom and light load. The manufacturers quoted fuel consumption is 14 gallons per hour at full chat but I don't run at that sort of speed, too expensive, loud and unsociable. We trundle about at 7.5Kn at 1400 rpm or 9Kn at 1600 and get about 2.5 to 3 gallons per hour which is much kinder on the wallet.

The good news is that the fuel consumption probably won't be as heavy as I was expecting. I'm going to have to accept slightly lower cruising speed than I was hoping for but even 9-10 knots will seem like a dream after 5 years of 6 knots maximum and the limitations that creates for cruising range. Plymouth to Dartmouth would take me the best part of 8 hours, which is a long time to be helming single handed. I'm a pretty good (self-taught) diesel mechanic and can handle most of the servicing myself so I might still go for the twin engine version.

I helped deliver a brand-new Princess 65 from Plymouth to Brighton back in the 80's. We went up doing 30+ knots and burned 3 tonnes of diesel to cover 200 miles. She was equiped with twin 800HP Caterpillar diesel engines. The tanks were near empty when we got there so that was effectively the daily cruising range of that vessel. 3 gallons per mile would break my heart and my bank account but what a buzz that was. I do love speed.
