Dear Members, Hi have just sent an e-mail to Simon asking some advice on speeds for my 1976 Lochin 33. I am running 'Kelly's Hero' from Brixham as a Fishing Charter boat having moved her down from the Bristol Channel earlier this year. I have contemplated selling her for a faster more modern vessel but nothing comes up to the spec regarding ride and sea keeping qualities. All my angling customers love her. I fitted her with a 335 hp 6C series Cummins a couple of years ago. Just wanted to know what speeds other Lochin of her age can achieve? regards Dave
Hi Dave, I like your boat....I was looking enviously at her a while back when she was moored up on the visitors pontoon outside the prince william, before i decided to go for the harbour pilot because i couldn't find one that suited me as i just want it for pleasure fishing and cruising. She is in good shape, i really like the lines of the older ones, there is nothing else like them and certainly a very capable sea boat Not sure what speed you should get with 335hp, i know they were very well built so i would guess heavy too but i am sure Simon, Harold and Chas on here, could help you out on that score! Probably bump into you soon as we both have boats in Brixham so will say hello. Good luck. Dave.
Hi Dave Thanks for your words of admiration. I agree and so do all my customers that the earlier Lochins were/are a lot more user friendly than any of the modern day fishing boats, the wider gunnels give anglers a place to put there bait and lures etc. Also the gunnels height is perfect for resting your hip against whilst wreck fishing. Modern designers should go back to the drawing board and forums to ask the anglers which boats are comfortable to fish from, resting your knees against a the sides of a modern clean lined boat, is not the answer when fishing in a force 4/5 reeling in a fish and trying to stand up!! Whats the name of your Lochin? I look forward to meeting up, maybe in the Prince one evening? regards Dave
The speed would depend to a certin extent on what type of keel you have amongst other things.
Stugsy has a Lochin 33 which looks as if it came out of the same yard as mine and within a few weeks judging by the fit out but there are major differences.
Mine is the long wheelhouse (sports cruiser) varient and has the full keel with the bar under the prop. It's currently fitted with a single 300HP Perkins Sabre.
I believe Stugsy's has the standard wheelhouse (a bit less weight) and a cut away keel with a P bracket (less underwater drag). I also seem to remember Stugsy having something like a 350HP engine.
Mine cruises at around 12k (depending on cleanliness of hull) and about 16k or so flat out.
I think Stugsy's cruises at about 14 to 15k and probably does about 19 or 20k flat out.
C0ckpits always seem a bit of a comprimise. A mate of mine has a Persuit 30 (an American sprots fishing boat) and on that the deck is only about 4" above the water and the gunwales are at thigh height. It's great for fishing out of as the gunwales are lower than your gimbal belt and because the gunwales are so close to the water; it's very easy to reach over to release fish. However if it's a bit rough, you don't feel that secure.
My deck is 6"or so above the water and the c0ckpit coaming is at about gimbal belt height so it's more secure and as I use it mostly as a cruising boat I can live with it but you can't lean over and get close to the water which isn't good for releasing fish.
If I just wanted a full blown fishing boat, I would be very tempted to lower my deck by a couple of inches then remove the coaming altogether but life's too short for that!
I totally agree with you on modern designs - it's quite obvious that the designers have never been fishing in their lives and if they have it was for nothing bigger than mackerel.
Good morning guys, Sundance has a 300hp engine and is the cut away keel version of the old 33 hull. She displaces approximately 7.5 - 8 ton depending on ammount of P.O.B. We cruise at 15.5 knots and flat out 18.5. A little more power would be useful to give a less revs relaxed cruise but i think we are using 77% power to get our 15.5 knots.
Hi Stu Thanks for that information. Do you have any pics of your prop/keel arrangement?
It might be that I have so much fishing tackle and junk onboard that I need to run a bit lighter to get some higher speeds? I have plenty of power from the 6C 335 hp Cummins and could increase it another 50hp without too much problem but then the fuel economy suffers as they all do when you put the hammer do down, (no pain no gain!) regards Dave.
I also run a 4 bladed 22 x 22 prop but was also thing about putting a larger pitched prop on as she revs out at 2600 very very easily and I think the engine could do would some more load putting on it. She doesn't jet over the hump until 2100 rpm fully loaded. Has any one fitted a bigger pitch prop than 22 ?
How much difference do trip tabs make to hump and top speed?
Wow Stu - that's what I call a positive and comprehensive answer!
How did you manage to asemble that data!
Although yours is faster, there's possibly less difference than I originally thought.
I'm overdue for an antifoul so I'll check my prop spec whilst she's out then try and plot my engine speed against speed through the water with a clean bottom.
The guy that I bought mine from bought a 333 Harbour Pilot with, I believe, a 350 Cat and it had trim tabs fitted.
I once asked him about trim tabs (as I was thinking of fitting them) and he gave me the impression that they didn't increase speed but by trimming the bow down he actually lost speed and had to be careful how he used them.
I can believe that, after all; you wouldn't expect an aeroplane to go faster with the flaps down.
Most early 33's do have tabs fitted and most owners I have spoken too have said that with nose trimmed down it does increase the speed and those skippers that are shorter than average, can now see where they are going!! Did you have any info on the pitch question? Regards Dave.
It seems that you have already answered your own previous question regarding the trim tabs.
Mine, like most others, does ride bows up. Doesn't cause me a vis problem but trimming the bow down would help when the missus is driving.
I did consider fitting them (still open to the idea as well). The people at Bennett sware blind they will work wonders (of course) but so far, after a few conversations other Lochin owners who have trim tabs, I'm yet to be convinced of their value.
I can get the bows down when the missus is driving simply by throttling back then she's happier and I burn less fuel. She only normally drives for relatively short periods when I'm checking other things or want a break.
No, I haven't got any answers regarding your prop pitch question but I know a couple of the guys on here have single 400 to 500 hp engines (Harold and Robbie Diesel) so they may be able to answer.
Also, with 400 or 500 hp under the floor trim tabs may become more advantageous.
Cheers
Chas

Hi Chas, the data was collected in an anal moment (i like to know speed v rpms so if all electronics are dead i know my speeds etc) and processed during a very quiet long boring day at the office....
Sundance has bennets tabs fitted and they are used at all times until the fuel tanks are at half load and/or when i have 4or5 persons in the ****pit - this gives better visability and wave contact with the sharper bow sections rathar than flatter mid section. No tab flat out 18 knots with tab 19. Not much difference but the ride and visability vastly improved.
TBH if you are cruising at 10/11 knots you probably wont notice the difference but after 11 knots i find the bow rises as the hull humps (you will see the bow wave break clear of the stern soon after 10 knots as the hull begins to semi-plane) and some tab is useful.
Apologies for not getting back sooner but been away on holiday. (Yep, with the missus on the boat but only stooging around in the Solent)
I'll have to check my performance out like you did.
It seems like not exactly a night and day difference by fitting the trim tabs. On the down side, there's more to damage and snag fishing lines on. Different, I'm sure with bigger engines than mine.
I fitted the factory spray deflector rails a few years ago (same time as I fitted a bow thruster) and they made hell of a difference. They turned a very wet boat into quite a dry boat and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone who hasn't got them fitted.
I saw a fuel flow meter at last year's Southampton show that interfaced with the GPS to calculate and indicate MPG. The one I saw was still quite expensive and wasn't that elegant but I'm sure it's only a short time before the likes of Raymarine catch on.
Once we get those fitted, I reckon we will all be throttling back.. well sometimes!
