Had an interesting charter a few days ago. We had a BBC film crew filming White Tailed Sea Eagles from Lady Jayne. It is for a childrens wildlife programme called Deadly 60 presented by Steve Backshall.
Thankfully we were lucky and the Eagles were interested and came close to the boat taking fish from the surface. Quite spectacular seeing these huge birds with 6 foot wingspans up close.
We have also had some good fishing so far, plenty of mackerel, coalies, pollack and the odd cod to brighten things up. The wildlife has also been interesting too with Basking sharks and even Sunfish turning up. Lets hope it continues and this wind dies down and allows us to get out. The new ''infant'' web site is up and running, still needs fine tuning and a few pics adding, see what you think www.mullcharters.com
How are you? If we had met you in person we could say we know someone famous? Good on you! It seems like everything is coming together for you and the chartering. The photo you posted is a spectacular shot, it looks like it was a great day. Any chance that some of the Lochin will be on the TV also? Wouldn't that be something. Not that we would probably get to see it down here. Most of the shows we get are about 100 years old! (Slight exageration). We actually love the british programs, but they come on for one season, and then they dissapear.
Your website is coming along really well too! It is important nowadays to have a website especially in your business.
I went the other day through some of the old posts and realised that I never answered your question. You asked me what engine and gearbox I was running in the boat. Yanmar 420hp 7.1L and a twin disk 2:1 spinning a four blader 23 x26.
I think famous might be stretching it a tad far, but it was good fun. The Sea Eagles are truly spectacular, enormeous wing span but very agile when they swoop down to take fish. The programme will be on CBBC next Spring so it might be shown down your way sometime.
The web site is still changing daily and I need to get my head round it to reflect on all the things we are trying to get across. I need to understand the structure and altering process so I can add pics and make changes my self.
I like the thought of your Yanmar, 420hp will really accelerate onto the plane quickly. My Sabre is running fine thanks, we have just clocked 65 hours since we started working with her and all seems fine, just added 1 litre of oil. I usually trundle about at 1400rpm but do give it a run at 2000 plus occasionally to clear the cob webs out. At 2300 (200 short of max) I have had 16 1/2 knots in flat seas but then it seems to run out of puff! I only have 280hp so might be asking a bit much. Everyone seems to prefer a steadier pace anyway. I am guessing with your set up you will be doing 22 knots? (plus) you will cover a lot of ground quickly.
Have you had much use from the boat since you launched her? I looked at all you photos and was hugely impressed with the workmanship and finish. Your pride in your work is obvious, I bet you have had some great comments from other boat owners in your marina.
Keep up the posting of the pics, it is something to look forward to.
Good to hear that the boat is going well, and I can't believe that you've already clocked 65 hours. Didn't you get a new propellor? It maybe have too much pitch? She should do 2500rpm. I wonder if the engine is labouring.
I don't know if you know that my dad had a 33 with a Sabre 212 in her back in 1978. She did about 19 - 20 knots with a clean bottom. Although she was a factory finished boat she was not too heavy, hence the speed. We had the boat for six years, and she performed perfectly. All she had done was 570 hours from new. Love the look of them.
I haven't spent much time yet on my boat, still need to finish off bits and pieces, but hardly seem to get time to do it. The Yanmar should do 2700 rpm but is over revving by 200. I have got a brand new propellor, came with the boat, and I need to lift her again and fit the new prop. We haven't really measured the speed yet, but I hope to get about 24 knots with the right prop, maybe 25? She weighs about 6.2 tonne. The weight of the yanmar is about 1 tonne including gearbox.
I don't think the engine is labouring at 2300, no black smoke and stays cool. I haven't tried revving the engine to 2500 with no load I don't like doing things like that in case I break something. I'm not too bothered at present as most people prefer to trundle round at 8 knots to see the wildlife, it also improves the fuel consumption. Flat out it is very noisy as well. I don't have adjustable trim tabs which might be one cause, did you dads boat have them? I just have extensions to the underwater profile which supposedly flattens the wake. What I have noticed is a bit of a rooster tail at about 1800rpm, any idea what causes that? One other thing could be the weight. The wheelhouse has been extended and the boat tends to look bow heavy at rest. She also has 40m of chain and a 46lb cqr on the front deck as well as fishing gear etc etc. so I suppose none of that helps. If I could move some weight aft I am sure it would improve the trim but worsen the ''squat '' at full revs.
As always in the end it will just have to be a compromise!!!!
