Hi all. ref. the new engine installation format of twin 370hp, you may guess from my user name I am that mad (or sad!) fool that wants to try something new....this forum being another! The format which has been developed, is V drives with volvo D6 engines using 50/50 twin disc remote gearboxes keeping engine weight well aft but allowing full engine accessibility and retaining the extended wheelhouse format of the harbour pilot. The horsepower is large i know, but we feel the reserve will enable us to get the hammer down when really needed and enable a high cruise speed with the seakeeping quality for which Lochins are renowned.........thats the theory anyway! She should be ready in about eight months from now and will be used privately for pleasure/fishing so, fingers crossed!!!
Looked at this idea many years ago for a 38, didn't go with it and glad we stuck to standard set up, keeps boat much more balanced with 12 pax onboard.
Hi Chas, thanks for the welcome. The weight distribution was verified by Lochins naval architects, Amgram, as a good choice for the harbour pilot and as i will only be using her for pleasure i didn't need to consider the carrying of twelve passengers plus a full fish hold! The other thing that influenced my decision to go with this idea was that the engines are completely accessible for maintenance. The mouldings are about to start and when ready, early august hopefully, will be delivered to my local builder in Plymouth where i can have some input and take photo's of the build process....so pics will appear in due course! Do you run a Lochin from the Solent yourself? Cheers, Dave.
Hi Fingers Crossed and a big welcome to the forum also! Thats a very interesting configuration you've opted for. By V drive do you mean having the engines mounted back to front, with the shaft passing back underneath the engine? It should fly with that amount of horse power! We have a Lochin 333 Harbour Pilot ourselves but it just runs on conventional shaft drive with a single 480hp Volvo Penta. It tops out at 25.4 knots and cruises fully loaded with 8 people and all the various junk involved in a trip at 20knots burning around 65 litres an hour. I think Volvo is squeezing 575hp out of the equivelent block today. I'm not quite sure what you mean by ease of access to the engines? heres a pic of our engine in the hull and access doesnt seem to much of a problem. I would love to see the Volvo Penta IPS drive fitted to a Lochin one day, they are claiming over 30% fuel savings over shaft drive.
Really look foward to seeing your build pics tho! Best of luck with your adventure mate
Congratulations on your choice of new craft, are you a current Lochin owner ?.
A Lochin Harbour Pilot with 740hp on tap will be fantastic but whether you will be able to use all that power really is immaterial because your fast cruise will be economical and noise levels at a minimum hence your choice of power i suspect . Being on V drive boxes my only concern is maintaining the Shaft Stern Glands, are you going to use the latest Volvo types which require minimal maintenance so im told.
Look forward to some updates on here as your new project progresses.
Hi Robbie and Geoff, thanks very much for the welcome. I don't currently have a Lochin, just a little Seaward but have worked on several Lochins in the past, twin and single engined as crew. I don't really expect to get more than about 28 or 29 knots tops, as i know that she is semi displacement and not planing, but i like the twin engine aspect, having picked up some rope around one of my props recently also helped me decide! Yes, the engines are facing forward, probably about a metre further aft than normal and run a short shaft to the gearbox that is situated under what would be the rear wheelhouse bulkhead, then driving the shaft back to prop. Not sure what the stern glands are called, but think they are Tides marine non drip and were recommended by my builder that is a very successful well known west country charter angling boat skipper. They are in front of the engine so very accessible! Robbie, your engine looks easier to work on than a lot of others i have seen, one i viewed, but it was a sports cruiser, had engines wedged underneath so tightly you could hardly get the dipstick out and anything else required a lot of wheelhouse dissmantling! Funny you should mention the IPS system....did look at it but was a bit unsure how the props could be protected facing forward with all the debris floating around here in the channel......someone else can experiment with that one for now! I have to say that seeing both of your boats on here makes me very envious as they look fantastic and only makes me wish i had mine......are we started yet Mr T? Cheers. Dave.
As a Lochin fanatic from way back, I like your idea to put the engines on v-drives. The 33 has got more than enough boyancy to take the weight of the engines. Do you know the weight of the D6's?
My dad looked into v-drives when he ordered his Aquabell 27 in 1971, but reliabilty issues stopped him from going down that path. Those days are long gone, and they should now give a long service life. After the Aquabell, my dad bought a Lochin 33 from Rye, but sold it when he moved to Oz in 1986.
I was never able to forget the Lochin my dad owned. The build quality and the seaworthiness is hard to find, especially here in Oz. That's why 3 years ago I imported a Lochin (built in 1984) with a brand new Yanmar 420hp (7.2 litre) coupled to a twin disk 2:1 spinning a four blader. We have just launched her after major refit, inside and out. (including re-gelcoat entire outside). The last 2 owners had been rather unkind to her, and my aim was to bring her back to original condition. In no means was all this work really necessary as build wise she was still solid as a rock. We got her through Simon (sight unsees) with much help from his end. I would not have trusted anybody else. He not only advised me but also prepared her for the shipping to oz.
Will be interested to hear further reports from you.
The Harbour Pilot has got the wheelhouse weight further forward that some others so it should work well.
Yeah, I've got an old long wheelhouse 33 (built 1977) with a single Perkins Sabre M300Ti. The previous owner used the boat for diving, semi commercially so it was cosmetically a bit scruffy but mechanically and electrically very sound.
I'm gradually restoring mine over the winters and using it from April to November, much inspired by Harold's good work. I'm based in sparkes Marina on Hayling Island.
Hi Harold and again Chas, it would seem that everyone on this forum really appreciates their Lochins and have either restored them to their former glory or looked after them well! Harold, I have been following your progress with your boat on here for sometime before i joined and think you have done a fantastic job bringing her up to scratch....it was well worth your hard work and as Chas said, inspiration to him and i'm sure others! Chas, was your wheelhouse extended from new? I only worked on the sport fisherman types and don't recall seeing anything else back then, but have seen a couple that have been extended very nicely since.....yours looks very tidy now anyway! Not sure of the weight of the D6's, but weight distribution was worked out at Amgram and they considered this arrangement a good option! She will have twin disk gearboxes and i believe four blade equipoise propellers. Simon helped me a lot with a couple of viewings of other Lochins but they weren't for me, so after a lot of thought, help and several phone calls with him i opted for new, (can i get some discount now Simon?)! Harold, It must be great down under cruising in what must be one of the best places on the planet, in one of the best looking boats there, knowing that if it comes up rough you are in safe keeping! Lochins do have a beautiful line to them and my missus can't understand how i can manage to spot one in a crowded marina........you just do don't you!! Cheers, Dave.
Yep, mine was originally built with the extended wheelhouse and it was by Cresta Marine (later becoming Coral Marine).
It would appear that the long wheelhouse ones have two parts grafted together. I always thought the way the wheelhouse had been done was specific to Cresta marine untill Harold posted a picture of his father's Lochin.
Anyway, I still didn't like the way it had been done and the windows didn't line up with anything and as the original windows were well past their sell by date; I modified it!
My Lochin as many of you know has twin Aqad 41a volvo's of 200hp giving approx 24 knots in the right conditions. A recent conversation with Volvo dealer suggested a pair of D4 300hp with a suggested top speed in the region of 30 knots but a Lottery win is required to fund such a major upgrade .
Dave are you having a Harbour pilot with flybridge?
Hi Chas and Geoff and anyone else interested in reading, I remember back in the seventies going fishing with ex Plymouth skipper Tony Allen on his Lochin 'Norvic'. I think she was a cresta fast fisherman......well she was fast back then anyway, being powered by about 180 hp. i believe, fishing way offshore we had some huge catches of fish too! That was my first experience in a Lochin and certainly gave me confidence she was capable in bad weather as we did encounter some at times!!! The one's i have seen 'down yer' in Devon, have noticeable extensions in the way they are extended, but don't look horrible! They just have a strip of say, 150mm wide x25mm thick profile, covering what would be the join and epoxied over i guess! No Geoff i'm not having the flybridge on mine although i can see the attraction to some people......thanks for the link to the engine site too! My boat is costing a 'large' fortune, but, i sold my house, did quite well on it and i aint getting any younger so hey ho!!! (no i'm not homeless either!!). Does anyone out there have any experience of the trim blades that can be fitted instead of trim tabs? They don't seem as vulnerable as tabs and seem to have good reviews! Cheers all. Dave.
I think I remember "Norvic" and Tony Allen from the angling press.
Interesting that she was called a "Cresta Fast Fisherman" because on my long wheelhouse varient it was just possibble to see in certian light where "Cresta Sports Fisherman" had once been written above the windows.
I never did like Lochin's "Sports Cruiser" designation because it makes it sound more like a Fairline Targa or something.
I used to fish in the early eighties with Ted Legg who ran a Lochin 33 out of Gosport and remember those huge catches from offshore wrecks. Ted then moved on to skippering a big game fishing boat in the Azores and I did fish with him out there but eventually lost touch with him altogether.
I used to have my own boat as well but it was old and slow, Ted's Lochin had Decca and a Proton Magnetometer.
I think all of the original yard built extended wheelhouse jobs had the wood over the joints untill the 333 came out. In my opinion, part of the reason that it is there is because nothing lines up that well and it hides it. I had to do quite a lot of grinding to get the sides of my wheelhouse flat when I did the modifications to mine.
I've still got the wood over the roof but I'll eventually remove it then grind a shallow "V" about 5mm or 6mm deep and 100 wide, glass it up, grind it just less than flat, re-gelcoat over it then sand and polish, similar to what I did on the sides.
Hello Chas, can't remember Ted Legg as most of my fishing was from Plymouth. Funnily enough Tony Allen runs a big game boat out of Florida somewhere now i believe......what are we doing wrong???? He also had Decca, huge great thing like a tv with big dials, a magnetometer also......nothing much left to find now is there?? There was another Lochin called 'zummerzet maid' operating from Plymouth and skippered by John Baron,.......last time i went on her she was on the river exe but don't know where she is now! Colin Dukes had a lovely twin engined Lochin called 'Smuggler', she had perkins diesels and was a brilliant sea boat! He's had a lot of boats since, but he has another Lochin now! Just heard from Mr.T. that my boat is underway and all moulding should be completed by end of july.....more money required (GULP), must get to take some photo's of her taking shape though! Cheers, Dave.
Haven't been able to contribute very much lately - too busy here. We have been building a 40ft Powercat catamaran for a charity which is now launched so 'gris to the mill' was necessary! And before you get excited guy's no we aren't building a Lochin Catamaran 'yet!'
Good to see that you are making use of this forum anyway and to see all the exchanges between you. It all helps to keep the information flow and more importantly keep you guy's interested in your boats.
Dave's ('fingers crossed' - sounds suspious Dave) new boat will be an interesting development and we are looking forward to working with him on this project.
Harold's boat is amazing and I know he has worked long and hard getting everything authentic and properly executed. I have seen his workmanship and I only wish he lived locally - there's a job waiting Harold if you get bored with all that sun and sea!
I remember now, Tony Allen had a Lochin 38 called Elctric Blue before he went to Florida.
I seem to remember that the Decca Navigator sets were about the size of a TV but with 3 dials and looked more like a big grey gas meter. You couldn't buy them either, as I remember - you had to hire them. I also remember the "pirate" decca sets coming in which caused an upset for Decca and the y subsequently brought out the "Decca Yacht Navigator" which you could buy but was still very expensive.
The early satelite navigation systems were fine for translantic yachtsmen but not much cop for anything else as they only updated about once an hour.
Now we have all the gear to find the fish (relatively, very cheap as well) but the fish ain't there anymore!
Oh well!
Morning Simon
Hoping you are well and nice to see you back on the forum again!
Im looking forward to seeing pictures of the new layout, its never a bad idea for someone to try something different. Good engine access is never missed until you need it most. As the 33 s tend to like a little weight in the stern im sure things will turn out good. Anyway, its nice to see some new faces and activity on here too!
