Looking to buy a Lochin

Hi,
We have just sold our Colvic Seaworker and am looking to buy a Lochin 33 to use as a dive boat. Our buget is in the 40s do you know of anything?
Is there any common faults of problem areas on Lochins we should pay particular attention to?
Are there any issues with fitting a transom door?
Hope you can help,
Nitroxwill
(Pembrokeshire)

Hi

A Lochin 33 has just come up on Find a Fishing Boat which sounds to be in your price range.

I am a just getting used to my Lochin having only owned one for a few months. They have a good reputation amongst people who know there boats and the only criticism I have come across is that they are very sensitive to weight distribution.

There are many different configurations of fuel tanks, engines etc which effect trim and carrying capacity etc. I am sure you will find the right boat for you. The general consensus seems to be ''you won't go far wrong with a Lochin'' They certainly hold there value and are well sought after.

Good luck

Martin

Hi Martin,

I'm still waiting for more photos of this one,  I dont think it's commercial spec as it hasn't got ribs and is only 5.5 tonnes.
We want to fit a transom door and a diver lift and am concerned about the strength.
There's a site called deepsea.co.uk which has a few but there's no way of telling how old the adverts are. I enquired about one that sold 18 months ago.
The biggest problem is there all so far away.
Thanks anyway,
Will

Hi

I see what you mean. Mine is 8.5 tons so quite a bit heavier. I have enquired about fitting a transom door and bathing platform on mine next winter, not for diving but for passenger access to dinghies etc. Because the transom is angled aft, they were going to have to fit triangular side pieces to make the doors vertical. In all the cost was going to be around £3000 which considering the work and materials involved wasn't too bad. The price included a substantial bathing platform

How much does a diver lift weigh? a lot of weight so far aft might have to be compensated for, I would check with a surveyor or someone who has fitted one in the past. I was told that passenger numbers would be restricted if carrying divers because of the weight of the gear.

Where are you based.

Regards

Martin

Hi Martin,

We haven't yet found a company who makes diver lifts, but were confident we can design and make one.  Because it's a person lift it has to be tested to about 800kgs. Initial guesstimations would suggest it;ll weigh about 200kgs.
We can play about with weight distribution by storing the cylinders in various places.
Don;t worry we'll discuss the issue with a surveyor before we get the grinder out.
We live in South Pembrokeshire

Hi,
the weight issue is not so much of a problem aft. The 33 tends to be a bit nose heavy and so the more you can move aft onto the flat, lift area of the hull the better. They will take a couple of ton aft before the stability is affected. There are a number in use with transom doors and lifts so that shouldn't be an issue. the main thing is to get one with a big enough engine. The one on findafishing boat has been for sale on and off for some time.

Give Simon a ring he is always willing to talk through the options.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for that info it's reasuring to know it can be done.
I agree with what your saying about the engine. There's quite a few Lochins (and similar) out there with smaller engines which I believe is due to fishing licence restrictions.
The Lochin on Findafishingboat.com can also be found on an old Boatshed advert under an other name which is where the lack of ribs and weight are to be seen. Also it has wery wide gunwhales like a Michell which seems different.
Regards,
Will

Hi Geoff,
I have looked at the pictures this boat and it too doesn't have the internal strenghening ribs and am concerned about strength.
I don't know if the difference is between commercial and normal spec or Mk1 and Mk2 boats.
It was only a few days ago I discovered this forum and haven't yet digested the information it contains.
I will certainly speak to Simon, and hopefully learn a bit more.
I'm also hoping the viewers of this forum may know of a Lochin that's coming up for sale.
Thanks,
Will

I dont think you have any problems with strength on any Lochins although i appreciate you are thinking about a transom door which may intale some beefing up.

Blue Swell is a Mk2 and has the extra ribs but not as many as the hull spec for the Brede class lifeboats or pilot boats, weighing in at 7.5 tons although twin engined and a sports cruiser version.

You will not be disappointed when you own a Lochin, ive had mine nearly 4 years and it gets better the rougher conditions  ..... very sure footed, a bit wet at times but will get you safely where you need to go when the conditions change for the worse.

Sometimes my friends dont agree with being at sea on those days, but they are just............................................ wimps biggrin

Geoff........

Have a look at Morning Glory on Finda fishing boat, its a 38 with transom door and dive ladders and has been on and reduced for a while. The 38 was heart stoppingly good and is an even better sea boat.

HI will

You could also check out http://www.lochalinedivecentre.co.uk/ they have a new dive boat which has just been fitted with a diver lift. They are based just across the water from me, looks very smart.

Hi Will and welcome to the forum.

Nice to see Alan and Geoff back after bit of a quiet period.

Mine is a mark one without the ribs and at thirty two years old, she is still in rude health. I think the ribs came in on the mark two varient

Not sure about the "commercial spec" you mention as they were virtually all built for commercial use of some sort. It would just seem that the life boats and pilot boats were built to an even higher spec. After all, you wouldn't expect your average charter or commercial fishing boat to be risking banging up against stricken ships in a force 8!

Apart from the lifeboat, GDSV and some commercial fishing and potting varients, they generally have either a full grp moulded superstructure including the c0ckpit coamings with the wide gunwales or a grp moulding back as far as the rear of the wheelhouse with wooden gunwhales around the c0ckpit.

If you factor in the cost of fitting a platform and transom door, that 38 looks very good value and as a dive boat she's ready to rock and roll.

Cheers and all the best

Chas

Hi All,

We have looked at Morning Glory and similar 38s but we have decided that their too big and thusty for our requirments.
A 33' Charter boat is a big step from a 22' Colvic Seaworker.
We are fortunate in that we have excellent workshop facilities and can pretty much make everything (except money) for our projects. Transom doors and dive platform arn't too difficult for us. Even the diver lift we can design and make from scratch.
Obviously if we find something with a door and lift it would be a bonus.

That's interesting to know!!

Presumably you will be offering preferential rates to other forumites

Hi All,

It's been a while, and we've now bought a 1997 333 which we're very pleased with.

Does anybody have (or know of) a Navionics Microchart covering West Wales. Its about the size of a credit card and about 1/8" thick. It's to fit a furuno GD-3300 video plotter.

Chas, re preferential rates, we'll help anyone.

Hi Nitroxwill

That's virtually a new one as far as Lochins go - any chance of posting some pics?

Cheers

Chas

Hi Chas (& everyone else),

Yes she's newer than we ever hoped to own, and hugely exceeded our budget. But as they say "spend it - you can't take it with you".

Here's one of the few photos we have.

Regards,

Will.

Hi Will,
unless I am very much mistaken your new boat looks like Mike Deems Blue thunder from Exmouth. She goes well and having known Mike for a long time i did consider her myself, but I needed the extra wheelhouse space as I will be using her for my own pleasure fishing/cruising and weekends onboard away with the family, so opted for a harbour pilot instead.
One thing I will tell you is that the engine will have been fastidiously maintained......
I'm sure you will be happy with her!
I too am taking a step up, having recently sold my Seaward 23 and having to down size temporarily to a 16 footer until my Lochin is built!
All the best with your's.
Regards, Dave.

Hi Will

Very business like - very nice indeed.

Totally agree with yoursentiments:

Nobody brings any money in to the world and it doesn't matter how much you make; you can't tak any with you.

But if you die owing money; you've made a profit!

Cheers

Chas

Hi Dave,

Well spotted, and yes she has been well maintained with only top quality parts. The only "Fly in the Ointment" so far has been the ****e weather but saying that we've had a few good days underneath her (diving).

Regards,

Will.
