Advice on propeller size

Hey guys,

At the minute i have a 300hp ford sabre. At 2000 rpm i cruise at 10 knots i was just wondering if it would be possible to put a bigger prop on the boat and if it is possible what would be the best size prop for the boat.

Cheers,
Bernard Heading

Hi Bernard

There's a separate thread on this subject entitled "Lochin 33 Prop Specs" where there is some useful information.

Try visiting "www.clementsmarine.co.uk" who seem to be spacialists in this area.

Cheers

Chas

Hi Bernard

Just found out I need a new prop due to electrolysis. I gave the spec to FAL Scottish propeller service and they ran my data through their computer. The boat was fitted with a 22x16 four bladed prop which cruised at 9.5 kn and gave 15 at full chat. It turns out that the prop was under spec and she should have a 22x18 four blade with a surface of 87%. This should give a slightly higher speed and cruise at lower revs while still making the engine work so it doesn't glaze the bores.

My engine is a 280 Sabre with a 2:1 ZF box so our specs are similar. Hope this helps.

Regards

Martin
