What Happened to Cygnus Marine

It would appear from looking at their web site that the owners of Cygnus Marine have retired and that the company is not currently trading.

Can anyone throw any light on whether they have been taken over or broken up or who has their moulds now.

They built some very good stuff and some of their boats were quite Lochin like.

You haven't aquired another boat building company on the quiet have you Simon?

hello chas

All the owners retired and everything got aution
off but they did offer the hole company for sale but they
couldn't get any buyers so it was broken up .

one of the owners carryed on dealing in fishing licence's
for a while but he knock off his bike and died in hospital

i know the cygnus cyclone 26 mould went up the east coast
because i was going to look at fitting one out in the front
garden .

Yes Dave has reiterated what I also heard about Cygnus. A fine Company and excellent product.

Erny Cooke, God bless him, was one of the prime movers and he sadly died as the result of a bike acident in Falmouth. I knew him well and we regularly had good conversation at boat shows because we had the same problems, high's and lows.

I understand the tooling has been split up and some of the moulds have gone to the Anglesey area others to Ireland and some of the smaller hull tooling to Southwold where the last completed Cygnus 38 is based (now on our brokerage due to owners ill changed circumstances)

It is a sad day that all that talent has gone never to be replaced. The quality of their craft will however live on in the secondhand market just like many of our boat building history now sadly depleted. In twenty years time, we probably won't have a boat builder left because Mr. GB and company will have legislated us into oblivian. As you can guess, I'm on my hobby horse!! ST

A sad ending indeed.

I always liked the look of Cygnus products but the moulds do still exist. Practically all of the boat builders seem to have come and gone but the products seem to live on in other hands. Aquabell, Mitchell, Newhaven Sea warrior etc. It seems that the only one that still continues is Aquastar but they have gone into the luxury motor yacht market.

We have a mass of EU legislation to contend with but the thing I can't understand is that whilst the French and Spanish may reluctantly accept it, the Brits seem so keen not only on gold plating it but enforcing it as well. Do you remember for example the metric martyrs? Ok, so the EU pass a law saying that things can only be sold in SI (metric) units. Fine, selling things in pounds and ounces is no longer legal but rather than just making that statement, our glorious government employ an army jobsworth tw*ts to go out and enforce it and at your and my expense.

Cr*p legislation aside, it has got to be quite difficult to cater for the boating market. Most peole who can afford a quality new boat also seem to want the flashiest boat like a Sunseeker. There are also budget production line boats that look flashy but are actaully heaps of dung but the people who buy them don't know any better, nor that they will be unmainainable scrap in ten years time.

The boating press must take a lot of the blame here, when did you last read a report of a boat where they criticised fundamental design, build quality or maintainability? The only thing they ever seem to criticise is cosmetics like the finish in the heads.

At night at our marina there is a mass of blue LEDs shining on many of the boats. The owners obviously think they look good but to me it looks like a cross between a Christmas tree and the Brussels red light district. I also think that they have never considered that every hole they drill for the LEDs is a leak waiting to happen! Oh well!

Sounds good Dave, I'd be interested to know how you get on.

Lot of work though, don't underestimate. I know what it is like just doing a restoration. A couple of guys on here have done it though.
