Nice one Robbie! when do I get an invite?

Unfortunately I haven't done much serious fishing for the last twenty years, mostly shooting since then. but here goes.

Some including the thresher was on my old boat, the bass and cod was on an old mates Lochin and to prove I used to get around a bit; some was in a pair of size 10 Doc Marten's

PS, got some marlin shots somewhere but don't know where they are (the missus filed them somewhere sensible?). I stopped killing big fish after that thresher (unless it was for the pot, of course) and would only do release fishing after that.

Been doing a bit of diving though!

Waw, very impressive fish there Chas.! How on earth did you land that big shark? I bet that gave a fair fight.! Only shark i ever cought was a Tope, but nowhere near that size! Is that Conger Eel in the first pic or very big Ling? Brilliant Pics, thanks very much 4 posting them.

About an hour of being towed a few miles then two fly gaffs and a lot of heaving!

Yeah two congers but not very big ones, about twenty five pounds each but good eating.

The trouble is that I never did take or get taken many fishing shots and the bigger problem is always finding the ones I have got.

Cheers and all the best

Ah, the late great Jack Hargraves!

When I was about five years old and first started fishing, his TV program - Out of Town was my favorite. I always wanted to have his job when I grew up, brilliant, spend all week out fishing and shooting then spend half an hour on TV talking about it. Sure beats working for a living!

When I started shark fishing around the island in the late seventies, I guess there was a fifty fifty chance of connecting during the "season". However, the season even then around the island was short, basically July and maybe the last week of June and first week of August. Outside that period the chances were slim so I didn't bother - used to fish for other things that could be caught like tope and eels.

Another big problem, as we have been reminded this year, was the weather. I reckon that half of the weekends in that short period were too windy to go out there especially in my old 25ft, 6 knot clinker built job.

Most of the sharks I caught I did release even then, just had the odd badly hooked one for the pot. Let's face it, who'd want a decomposing shark on their boat all weekend! Maybe it wouldn't have smelled anything like as bad as the rubby dubby but there just wasn't room for them on the boat and to carry on fishing.

The trouble really was that in the early eighties people started commercial fishing for them and by the mid eighties there weren't enough left to make it viable to fish for them any more.

In those days a Decca set was the size of a gas oven and could only be hired so wreck fishing would not really have have been an option for me so I sold my boat and used to book a charter boat that was run by a skipper I used to know and also started fishing abroad.

Nice trophie photos boys!

But take a look at these beauties!!

They are much more prettier down here.

The one and only time we did get out with the Lochin was in July 2006 for a day trip with some friends. Didn't get much on the day but have attached some pics of the ones that didn't get away.

Bye for now,

Harolds typist.

Is that the fish or the girls? Or both? Or the typists?smile.gif

Very nice catch Harold, are they good to eat? I bet you don't have to get too wet and cold for them!

I expect that you'll be able to post some shark fishing pictures that will put us all to shame!

Cheers
