Neco Capstans

Anybody ever stripped one down before?

I've got one and I've never been able to find any information on the web.

I've had to strip mine as it was originally fitted on with galvaised bolts, three of which have corroded in solid and have to be drilled out.

Any information would be gratefully recieved.

Mine still works OK so I'm not up for changing it.

Cheers

Chas

Hi Chas: Neco Capstan's 'God Bless Them' - they went out of production about 20 years ago so doubt you will find any parts now. However, I suggest talking to Colin Turner of CJ Engineering in Brighton Marina as he (ex Lochin 33 Owner and charter skipper) produces a clone of the Neco but better. Now, I don;t expect you will want to buy new but he may offer some advice if needs be - Tel: 01273 818181. Be prepared for a long call!!

i stirped my mates one down for him becaused
he said it was running slower than it should be
the only thing wrong with it was the grese had gone hard
so i just clean it out put some new grese in good as new
not bad for a winch thats 20-30 years old

Hi Dave

I removed the drum from mine and there is like an aluminium can containing the motor windings which sticks up from the base and there is a rubber seal where the can joins the base. Is this can part of the base casting or is it detachable?

Cheers

Chas

I've got everthing un bolted maybe its just "stuck" in position. I'll try a few gentle taps with a mallet. It would certianly be a lot easier to re-assemble the motor and position the brushes if the can comes off.

on the under side of the winch is there a single
bolt in the middle or three bolts in the middle where the moter
sits

I've stripped everything out from underneath the base; switch, soleniod etc. I haven't got it in front of me but as I remember there are 3 or 4 nuts which are attached to long bolts which go through the casing of the can, these are out and the drum is off. There are also another two which are connected to the brushes, these are loose. There are no other visible nuts or bolts underneath.

with the base of the winch on the deck
and looking at the top of the moter is there
a shaft coming out of the middle of the moter
with a nut or cer-clip holding

The motor shaft came out with the drum ans is currently attached at the top of the drum underneath the domed top plate which I presume houses the reduction gearbox.

four bolts on top of the dome take them out and detach the moter that way

Hi Dave the motor is apart.

What I've got is the base section which bolts to the deck. Protruding up from this base section is an aluminium can or tube which contains the motor windings. The outside of the can is covered in old grease and fits inside the drum. There is a detachable rubber seal around the base if the can, everything is undone but the can is still sticking up from the base so it looks a bit like a top hat. What I'm not sure is if this can is part of the base casting or is just stuck in position and in need of a gentle tap or two to remove it.

I could take a photo of what I've got if I'm not explaining myself very well.

I spoke to Colin Turner and the housing (can) containing the motor field windings is now off. It just needed a little gentle tapping. Thanks for providing his number Roger.

I can now get the corroded bolts drilled out of the base and I'll probably have about 1mm skimmed off the bottom to get rid of the corrosion and get a better seal when I refit it.

I'll report back as it progresses.

Hi Dave, how you doing?

Yep, got it apart OK, Got the old bolts drilled out and had about 1mm skimmed of the bottom so that it sits nice and flat. The old bolts were really corroded in and to remove the corrosion I drilled out for M14 bolts. I then got it all cleaned up, reassembled and it's all fine.

I junked to old wooden mounting block and made up a new base from 12mm thick delrin, an engineering plastic. It seems bloody good stuff, you can maching it on wood tools yet it's as tough as old boots. I'll be using this under deck fittings rather than plywood in future.

I haven't got it back on yet as I have been repairing and making good the GRP around the general area whilst it is off and I'm still mulling over whether I can fit some sort of roller (either permanent or preferably detachable) for winching up things like shot lines.

I've been delayed by when it's good weather I've been going out and when it's been bad it's been raining so couldn't do gel coat anyway.

I'll post a picture when it's finished.

Cheers

Chas
